Coloquio de Investigación: Skill Measurement, Returns and Mismatch: Evidence from Narrative Evaluations
This project studies how narrative evaluations-paragraph-length assessments of students' performance-offer a new lens to measure cognitive and soft skills and their labor market value. I exploit a natural experiment at UC Santa Cruz, which used only evaluations until 1997, both evaluations and grades until 2010, and then discontinued them. Linking USC's academic records with labor data, I ask: (i) Do evaluations add information beyond grades, acting as complements or substitutes? (ii) How can skills be extracted from text, and do their returns differ by demographics? (iii) Can evaluations help identify skill-major mismatches and mitigate their educational consequences?
